Our PM Controversial CNY Advertisement

Our Malaysian PM, Ah Jib Kor, made this advertisement in the hope of capturing the heart of Chinese voters...

In the process and with good intention, he was criticized for doing something foolish. Anyway, I think it is a good try.
However, in the advertisement, an important Chinese character is wrongly written rendering it meaningless...
The above word is supposed to be written "吉", ie, the upper stroke is longer than the stroke below. My son told me that there is no such word. However, if I take the Chinese character apart, it now means soil over the mouth... which is bad luck indeed! Otherwise, "吉" is supposed to mean good fortune or good luck! How can the advertiser made such a mistake or is it deliberate?!

CNY Celebration at Dato Sebastian Ting's Residence

This morning we went to Dato Sebastian Ting's residence to join him in welcoming the TYT's (Governor of Sarawak) arrival and visit. After introducing some of the important guests, they went straight to the reception.
TYT stayed for exactly 45 minutes and proceeded to visit other VIPs in Miri.

Lunar (Chinese) New Year, 2013, Miri

Comparing to 2012, we definitely find the number of people at the night market to be overwhelming. And food is definitely not cheap either! However, one thing that is still free for me is to watch people playing ...
... firework. My son and myself went over to Krokop 9 to watch the above. Just in case you are interested to know how I shoot this firework: Mount camera on tripod, set ISO to lowest, Set Shutter speed to 4-8 sec and aperture to 8-22. You need to experiment to get ideal result.
Fish seems to be a must and just look at the price! It is beyond the reach of many people. I almost fainted seeing the price increased by at some 50-100%!
The price of tiger prawn is an amazing RM100-120/kg! But still people buy them.
See the number of people in the street. You can't even walk through! So, I gave up.
The usual performances at King's Street. It seems that the crowd was much bigger than previous year.

I have posted more photos on my facebook. Click here.

Day 2 Chinese New Year

During day one of Chinese new year, most people reserve it for visiting close relatives. During the second day, friends started to visit each other. And that is what we did. We went to a few friends and VVIP houses, I mean they are politician or businessmen.
For a collection of photos, please click here. New year also means ang pow (small money in red package) time. In the good old days, this ang pow is meant for parents to children. Now, they are freely given.

Chinese New Year 2011

It seems that 2011 Chinese New Year came a bit too early! Is this a sign of me getting old? A mathematician once said that as we grow older, the years also seems to pass by faster because it is relative. Example, at 10 years old, one calendar year represent 1/10 of one's life and at 50, one year is 1/50 of one's life! So, a year is very short if you are at 50. Anyway...
2011 Chinese New year is no different from previous year...
You cannot miss Lion dance. Although this is a Chinese culture, the lion dance troupe consists...
... people from all ethic group! This is a very good unity spirit! Chinese New Year is also a time for ...
... food. This year I got food poisoning and I have stomach pain for the last two days.
It is also a time for "open house" and visiting. Never mind whether you were invited or not, if you saw a politician house or someone of influence, just drop in. No one will chase anyone away as long as you don't create havoc!
For children, it is the best time to collect "Ang Pow"! Normally the host will give children ang pow, which contains a few ringgits. At one of the politician houses, I saw a group of kids who came by themselves to collect ang pow.

Wishing all my friends and readers a happy Chinese New Year

Wishing you a happy and prosperous New Year. This greeting comes to wish you a New Year that’ll bring a happy assortment of life’s finest things; Health, happiness, joy and blessing from God! Have a wonderful time!

“And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown. And he replied: Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light, and safer than a known way.” –Minnie L. Haskins

“Glory to God in highest heaven,
Who unto man His Son hath given;
While angels sing with tender mirth,
A glad new year to all the earth”
–Martin Luther

+Chinese New Year 2010

I had been taking so many photos over the last few days and couldn't find time to upload! So, here is the first "installment" . This year, the first day of Chinese New Year fell on Valentine day.
Boulevard used their imagination to decorate their mall...
Mad rush on the last few days before new year... Fresh flower ...
... and more!
Decoration of King's Street in Miri by the local council.
King's Street was packed with people...
... to watch the "tiger dance"!
This mascot is getting "familiar" ...
Boulevard shopping mall was taking advantage of the Valentine's day and sold flowers!
New year eve, Krokop 10 market was filled with people buying anything nice!
Lots of food ...
Man made "peach"...
Fish is a must so that next next will be in "abundance"
Nien Kau (or sticky sweet cake) is a must otherwise the devils will return to hell to report that the people are celebrating! So, this sticky stuff will glue their mouth shut!
I learned to make momo this year!
This year, the fire work were not as intense as last year. I think the noise was over in just 15 minutes and there were a lot less firework.
