Landslide in Miri

This morning, we left home earlier by 10 minutes... thinking that after almost two weeks of school reopening, we finally manage to arrive in school earlier than the normal.

But about 1.5KM away from school, we found the traffic coming to a crawl! We were thinking that it must be an accident. Anyway, we arrive at the school late instead of being early.

The cause of the traffic crawl was because of a landslide at Canada Hill. Canada Hill had a history of landslide 30 years ago. Canada Hill is simply a long strip of hill, probably about 0.5-1KM wide. Both side of the hill are very steep and the soil is not very firm... kind of sandy and poor formation of soil, eg, with many fault lines.
The Shell Petrol station (opposite Bintang Plaza) is situated below the hill and its opening hours is 6AM-10PM. I was told that this landslide happened in the early hours of today (16 Jan). However, I was told that two employees of the station stayed there overnight because they need to open the station early. Sources (from the bystanders) told me that these two persons are missing. I just hope that for last night, they have decided not to stay there!

The damage to the station is extensive. I would say that the content is flatten except the roof is still standing but with severe structural damages ...

... and the service structure (white block on the left) still stands.
This happens after about 3 weeks of heavy rain. Since December, this is the second landslide I saw. One was at Damansara in KL.

Latest update 10:45AM: I was told that one Chinese and one Indonesian who stay in a "porta-cabin" behind the station are still missing.

This picture shows the houses just above the landslide.

Update: 2:00PM Unconfirmed sources informed that there were two dead.
Update 19 Jan 2009: According to See Hua Daily News, the two dead are both Indonesian Chinese coming to Miri to earn a living. They havdno plan to go back to Indonesia for the Chinese New Year celebration as they were too poor.

William you and your camera must be the first on the scene today!!
Your photos have been forwarded to people all over the world! I saw the massive traffic jam but when I took a break this morning I saw a forwarded "blog news" in my office pc!!

Wow you were fast!! And a reader was equally fast!!

About 1 p.m. the ambulance passed my workplace. It must have taken the rescue team such a long time to dig out the casualties.

Ya, my colleague told me that she received "my blog" through her e-mail. Then an hour later, another one arrived. My other colleagues also receive "my blog". It is amazing how fast news travel! But also thanks to those e-mailing of my blog otherwise my blog site is really jammed today.

Indeed I think I am the first one to arrive with a big camera. Others were caught in the traffic and still wondering how to get to town.

Sad news. There should be some precautions. Who is to blame now?

Anonymous said...

Glad to found bloggers from same town...

I used to use this road everyday when going home as my office was at Jalan Bintang Jaya.

This morning I was puzzled why the traffics move soooo damn slow...

I do not know until my friend email this post to me... lol

Davis,
That is on the foot of the other side of Canada Hill? The slope of this hill is too steep to be comfortable.

its look like the slandslide now happen everywhere ,not only in bukit antarabangsa only,so how's the housing project in canada hill in the future..|???

William said...

Thrasher115: I don't know about the housing project there. But before buying, do some analysis and follow the heart... just remember that all developments on steep slope and below the steep slope look great but it is also high risk.

Hi Photo Tip Man, you are right. Unfortunately my camera is too big to be at my side all the time. So sometimes I have to run back to pick up my camera.
