Sin Siang Hai Furniture Fair

Just in case you are not aware, Sin Siang Hai is the largest single Furniture Mall in Malaysia. It occupies eight shop lots and I think it is 4 stories. In West Malaysia, there are many large furniture shopping complex but they are rented to individual tenant.
Sin Siang Hai is currently on 3 days furniture fair and sales and they do have very good bargains. So, whatever is your home requirement, do pay them a visit. Sunday, 5 Aug is their last day.
Perhaps this is their most hitech bedding set.
I called this Sara's corner as this is her "creation" and arrangement. All the accessories here is meant to transform your home!

My shopping experience

The market is now flooded with products made in China. Some are of reasonable quality and some are simply badly made. Yet the prices can be very close, or in fact, expensive!
First, I changed the braking switch for my car. It cost RM28 for a switch. Every time I pressed the brake paddle, it made that "click" sound. We all thought that it was good. The thing looks solid. But it lasted for only 3 days! I was told that an original unit would have costed >RM200.
Last few days, I went to every known office supplies shop or stationary shop in Miri looking for a cutter...
The price ranges from RM62 to RM100+. Mostly, the base is made from a piece of thin plywood. The last stop was Popular and to my surprised, the sales person told us that the last unit has been sold! By chance, we saw one unit on the shelf... exactly what I was looking for, a 7 inch cutter with a steel base. The price was RM45 and with a borrowed discount card, the price went down by 10% to RM40.50!
So, it pays to shop around. Especially in Miri, don't just pay for any item with any price stuck on it.

Belian Furniture

Egg shop in Seberkas, Miri has moved to e-mart and a new furniture shop is now in its place. They are selling furniture made from belian (iron wood) and they are very solid. Belian is beautiful and very lasting. I personally like them very much. The only issue is perhaps the prices. But, I strongly believe that those furniture  were built to last 100 years or more!
The shop front
Table. Notice the thickness of the table top.
Another super table. They are built to last!
Another table. Look at the stools...
A belian bed set!
They have a mountain of chopping board. They are probably one of the few items not made from belian. Chopping board made from Belian is no good as the wood is brittle. Chopping anything on it will be spoilt with tiny bits of wood chip!

Household Supplies

In the most unlikely place in Piasau Industrial Park, there is this huge "warehouse" selling all type of household equipment. The boss told me that instead of spending thousands on rental in town, he might as well use this place...
The front has this huge containers used as wall and also storage. Stepping inside...
... I found the largest collection of woks... cast iron wok, which is cheap and lasting,
to those which look like zine alloy, which is light. So, if you need a traditional wok, how about try this place!
So if you don't like wok, then there are pans of all shapes and sizes for you to choose.
... stock pot of all sizes...
... more pots and pans...
... or if you need a glass bottle for making enzyme or whatever, they have it here too!
Water dispensers of all sizes to suit your needs.
... and plastic containers.
I found this "traditional" lighter on the left most interesting. It has a cartridge which you would fill it with kerosene. This cartridge is then inserted into the "body". As you press open the lid, it strike a fling and fired the kerosene fill tip. I remember using this thing when I was very young.
Miri Departmental Store used to be in town opposite the fish market. So, it has now moved to this place.
How to get there: Just before the Piasau bridge, there is a set of traffic light. Drive into Piasau Industrial Park. It is the 2nd building on the right.

New Product from Porky Shop

Contact mobile: Mr. Panzer Christian: +6014 877 2770 e-mail: porkyshop@gmail.com

Porky Shop at e-mart has brought out some new products for the local market. Normally all these products are imported frozen and they don't taste good.
Sliced smoked pork feet ready to be served!
Just in case you don't want it sliced, they are available in whole pork feet!
Fresh Smoked Bacon in block. Mdm Chieng proudly holding up a block of this bacon.
Smoked Bacon... you can order what you need and they will slice it for you.
Honey Ham. This must be a first in Miri available freshly made.
Pastrami... it look delicious! Also a first in Miri!
They also made a whole lot of sausages in-house. No point for me to tell you how delicious unless you try it! They are precooked and I will grill it or gently fry it before serving. If you are lucky to find it fresh from their oven, they can be eaten immediately!
This is where Porky shop is at e-mart. It is just opposite the native BBQ stalls by the main road.
Meet the chief cook and butcher Mr. Christian with his son.
I visited their shop when they were first open. I look at their concept and I know that they are going to be popular because customers can choose what they want. That is what we love to do right?
Forgot to mention, all precooked food is vacuum sealed to maintain freshness.

How to go there:

Supermarket Trickery

Very often, we encountered the situation where offer items and non-offer items were place together on the supermarket shelves. Sometimes, their illegible handwriting was so confusing that you can't even read what was written! I was in a certain supermarket on 19th July and overheard a woman complaining bitterly about the ice cream on offer.
She took the ice cream from this ice box only to find that they were not for 99 cents. Although 99 cents were written everywhere! The attendance said that the offer item had been sold out!
I was in Australia many years ago. I picked a piece of merchandise from a basket for a certain amount. On check out, I found that the item was actually of a different price. I just said "I thought this item is for $xxx?". The cashier asked where I got it and without a second question, she clocked in the amount displayed. I later found that the item was supposed to be from a higher priced basket!
In Malaysia, our consumer's right in this case seem to be non existence or am I just being ignorant?

Note: From the comments from readers, it seems that we didn't stand up fopr our right! So, dear reader, please be assertive next time. Don't say "never mind". Make a fuss out of it if you are right!

Lovely Lace, Miri

My friend opened the first Lovely Lace in Sarawak. I actually didn't know that there is such a chain store.
I like the design and layout of the shop. The merchandise surprises me... as the name of the shop suggested, they are simply lovely....
... nice to look at, nice to touch, nice to smell and pleasing to the eyes...
... I wish I can bring some home. Unfortunately, my home has no more space to put anymore ...
... lovely or cute stuff ...
... go go.. if you haven't been there, go! It is on the third floor, new wing, Bintang Plaza.
Note: This blog receive no payment from anyone. So, my view is independent!

World of Cartoons

At the beginning of the month, World of Cartoons open an outlet in Miri Bintang Megamall.
The nice looking and attractive external!
They have a good selection of quality goodies for kids... baby pram, clothing, ...
... soft toys and attractive children clothing...
... fashion sun glasses for children ...
... walkers, prams ...
... barbie dolls ...
.... attractive clothing ...
... and more of them with colours which are pleasing to the eyes ...
... and also children shoes!
Price wise, I think they are ok as they have certain quality to maintain. Oh, I can't remember how much you need to buy and you get a free membership card. That would entitle the holder 20% discount. Good deal! Worth visiting them if you have kids.
