Parents can be so careless!

A couple put their baby in the machine machine to scare him but it turned out to be a bad idea as the machine had auto lock system and it took the child for a spin. The child suffered minor injuries and is safe.

My legs turned jelly just by watching

How safety concious are you? For the sake of survival, are you willing to gamble your life away. I was witnessing these four guys trying to hang up a sign board. Just by watching I felt that numbing feeling on both of my legs. They must be 30 feet above ground and worse, the ladders they use were rather small and the persons holding onto the ladders pay no attention at all. One even walked away!
Did you notice that both ladders were slanting? I went over to tell the guy in red and he said that he knows. I wish I could issue a stop work order like in Shell.
Life seems to be so worthless! Love your life and work safely. Your loved ones are waiting for your return in the evening.

Bulatan Park is Hard Hat Area

My walking buddies at Bulatan Park decided to wear safety helmet in order to proof a point....
Ever wonder why?
While walking at the park, they need to watch out for projectile from above ... it is not bird dropping... but
.. flying dried branches! The other day, dry branches broke off and came crashing to the path below just in front of me! Small branches may not cause a great deal of physical hurt but they were all quite big which is a safety hazard.
A closer look reviewed that there are quite a lot of dry branches and they can come crashing down any time.  Some are very big and some are small. Whatever, they are hazard!
This entrance had never been level and always collect water after rain. The road is slippery and also a slip hazard.
When can the authority instruct the park maintenance people to pull down dry branches instead of chopping off harmless palm leaves before anyone is hurt? Don't forget to level this stretch of road.

Safety and safety

Over the last few days, many newspapers headline was about the 4 siblings who where drowned while collecting shell fish at the river bank. The news was really sad but could be avoided.
When I was small, we stayed next to a river. There was also a canal which run along our veggie garden. There were a lot of fish. The temptation to throw in a line and hook to catch fish was so great that we did tried once. I can still remember my mum reaction when she saw the fish we caught. My brother and myself got a good lecture and beating! The fish never reached the table as it flew right out of the window! The words "Don't go near the river" still ring in our ears until today.
Whatever it is, think safety first.

Freak Accident

Look at this accident in The Star today: http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/12/7/nation/5253283&sec=nation

We probably have heard of birds falling out of the sky. But this one ... a car drop out of the sky! The most amazing part is that the driver didn't die but instead, two unfortunate victim died because they were hit by flying debris.

Thank God that the car dropped between the escalators otherwise I am sure that there would be more death.

Safety note: Don't let a minor into the car seat. Always think safety first before you do anything.

Accident at Jee Foh 4 (outside Yakin)

This afternoon at about 1:00PM, there was a motorcycle-car collision. It happened along the junction of Red Crescent road and Jee Foh 4.
This red Toyota turned into Jee Foh 4 and a motorcycle coming along the main road collided with the car.The pillion rider was ok but the bike rider had a broken leg and arm.
I happen to pass by the place and was concern whether ambulance had been called. So, I also stay there to witness how the medical evacuate him.
The medical team was efficient and surely they know what to do in the most professional manner.
See the damage. For the benefit of 4D friends, the number of the car is 1729.

Safety.... please be aware

Alert 1: Do not leave chargeable device plugged in unattended.

My colleague in Canada nearly burnt his car and he was lucky to have checked his car before he went to bed. Otherwise, it was unthinkable what would happen. He left his iPhone plugged in for charging and apparently this device overheated and caught fire.

Lesson learnt: Never leave charging unattended. Even at home! Remember to switch off all devices before leaving the room. Never take chances with electricity. Handphone and driving does not mix!

The Honda crotch rocket rider was traveling at approximately 85 mph. The VW driver was talking on a cell phone when she pulled out from a side street, apparently not seeing the motorcycle. The riders reaction time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident. The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them. The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 20 feet from where the collision took place. All three involved (two in the car and the bike rider) were killed instantly. This graphic demonstration was placed at the Motorcycle Fair by the Police and Road Safety Department. Pass this on to car drivers or soon to be new drivers, or new motorcycle owners. A picture is worth a thousand words. Wake up people, Stop talking on Cell phones and Texting while trying to drive. Put your Cell phone in the back seat !!!

Stung by hornet

We have been hearing about hornet attack on a family of five which resulted in the death of 2 siblings and another one in critical condition. I just wanted to relate my own experience.
Two years ago, I was also stung three times by hornets. I can tell you that it was very painful! After the stung, I felt like fainting! I was in Sarikei at that time and was on my way to Sibu. I immediately went to Sibu and see a doctor. Guess what, my blood pressure shot up to 220! Normal is 120-130! No wonder people faint or die from such a sting.
My advice is never to venture into unknown bush or places where you are not familiar or you see big bees flying around!
Talking about bees, do you think that bees become aggressive when seeing unfamiliar people? I was in Sibu visiting my friend. I was walking along a path and suddenly a bee stung me! My friend, who has been staying there, was never bitten before! Tell me your experience if you have one.

Texting, handphone and driving don't mix

After watching this, I hope everyone doesn't do texting or talking on handphone while you are driving!

Watch your steps

In Miri, you will find unexpected "trap" along footpath...
I have personally tried to push this protruding handle down but without luck. Apparently the handle was made too far to the edge and the concrete edge beneath it prevented the handle to be pushed in, thus making this handle dangerous.
To the authority concerned, this thing is just outside Dynasty hotel. This footpath is used by students and parents every morning and I just hope that no one trip over. So, please make this path safe for us.
There is another rusty and sharp open ended segment of a 4" steel pipe protruding out of the ground just outside Chung Hua Primary School, opposite Dynasty hotel. Please fix this also before anyone fall on it and dig a huge hole on the limb!

Bintang Plaza is growing ...

If you are from Miri, you would have noticed the constant changes around Bintang Plaza and the complex itself. First, there is traffic jam in front of the complex due to the construction, next all the trees in front was taken down. Road is currently being widen. Of course the complex itself doesn't stop growing upward. When completed, it will be another hotel.
I was driving up the car park (on the left of this picture) and noticed a huge traffic jam. Apparently, people are relunctant to go higher up. So, they will wait and wait at the lower floors when the upper floors are quite empty. Anyway, the parking is currently free of charge.
This place appeals to youngster a lot. But with the larger shopping mall, I think many more people will flood there.

Unsafe Miri Road

Tonight has been raining rather heavily and I thought it is perfect timing for me to go out and shoot "night scene"! Because with the aid of water, it can prove my point clearer.
This is not meant to discredit anyone but rather to prompt the authority to think safety before doing anything. Because many of us use the road everyday. Well, you must have guessed that I work for Shell and therefore safety is our top priority because it saves life. Our loved ones expected us to return home safely everyday and therefore, we must do our part to guarantee that.
This is a road hump. The authority built many of them and also left most of them without maintenance. When the paint has peeled off, the hump becomes "invisible" like the one in this picture. So, it is more dangerous to the road users, especially motorcyclists when they ride over without slowing down. For cars, we have damaged underside.
Even more dangerous is when the contractor build a new hump and didn't paint it immediately. I heard of two motorcyclists died because of new hump without paint! So, who are we trying to save when we do thing in an unsafe manner? Can the authority ensure that new hump are painted immediately and old ones are properly maintained?
This is the most dangerous junction in Miri, and I am sure that there are many of them. This junction is after Pujut 7 bridge. On the right of this picture is Permyjaya. During the day time, the visibility is alright. However, during the night, the road divider for traffic going straight is invisible. Worse, there is no street light on the left. See for yourself on the picture above!
On a closeup view of the road, it is now clear that the left side is completely dark. Also, it is clear that many had run into the barrier/road divider - just see the traffic road sign being knocked down. The road divider is a very good idea but please make it safe! I suggest that the authority install some highly reflective material on the barrier and install more street lights to brighten up the place. If the authority cannot maintain the barrier, please make it lower, eg, three inches. The standard height is a killer if anyone runs into it. Think, what happen if your loved ones run into it!
While driving along the newly resurfaced road between SESCO and Pujut 7, you may have the feeling that the tyre is having problem or the car suspension is messed up. Yet the road surface look reasonably smooth. Anyway, if you have been wondering whether it is your car is having problem, think no more. The road has proven to have uneven surface that is invisible to the eyes as reviewed in the photo above. The arrows point to the uneven parts! I am sure that they were not made intentionally. Perhaps, just poor workmanship!

Ah Jon Wreck his car today

Our 28 years old Toyota GL "black Belt" driven by Ah Jon was involved in a self accident. Ah Jon was on his way back from Curtin University this morning at 9:40AM.
According to his word, he stepped on his brake and the next thing he remembered was the car in this position. Is it possible that one side of the brake has jammed up? He just sent the car for brake servicing last Saturday!
The driver's side door hit the coconut tree and this is the result.
He actually hit a banana tree on the left side of the car (see bumper) and this had helped to slowed down the car. Because of the side force, the car skidded and ended up hitting the coconut tree just next to it on the driver's side.

We sent him for X-Ray... this is the side view.
The is the front view.
So he ended up in hospital for observation. But the specialist clinic has WiFi and therefore he is not lonely!
Thanks God that everything works out fine. We are thankful that a banana tree was in the way which has helped to slow down the car.
For information, there is no wound on his body. He only complained about pain near the stomach. We went to see him at 5:30PM and he looked fine.

Borneo's Moment of Truth

The majestic forests are vanishing in smoke and sawdust, but there's still hope for the island's fabled biodiversity—if the palm oil rush can be slowed.

Quite a long article in the National Geographic. Must read especially if you are from Sarawak.

Jonathan lost his handphone again

Two months back, Jonathan park his car opposite the school and has his handphone stolen. It was in the public place. So, he has no eyewitness. Since then, he moved his car and park within the school. Yesterday, he saw his form mate "doing something" in the car. He lost his handphone again. Apparently this form 5 boy has already mastered the skill to open car door and steal stuff. How to survive for the rest of his life? Living a life as thief or not? Shall I report this to the police? I am not sure what to do. Any opinion?
Update:
I have consulted the head of security today and he advised me to talk to the headmaster, get the discipline teacher to act on it. If all fail, then I will have to report this to the police. The police will get in the boy for questioning.

New way to park your car
This morning I went to the office and found this car which veer off the road and ended up violently on the roadside.

Could it be due to too much drinking? Or saw "something" or simply fallen asleep or the car was "not controllable at that moment of time"? Only the driver knew. So, all drivers, please love your life, take care when you drive.

Amazing Miri Drivers
There were so many amazing self accident in Miri...

This is a safety feature to stop drivers from driving into the divider of the newly completed flyover. With weeks, two out of four such safety devices were smashed up! Now, they are left without repair for weeks. So the next driver who is going to knock into this thing is going to be seriously hurt!
Update: 12 September 2008 This morning, I saw the one infront of Boulevard Pujut has been been repaired!

The roundabout between Pujut 3-4 (just outside GK supermarket), is a favorite spot for "flying cars". Now, the road from Miri town all the way to Lutong is literally a straight road, spanning a distant of about 12KM. However, along this stretch of straight road, there are 4 roundabouts.
On Friday evening, I saw a car right in the middle of this roundabout. You can still see the tyre mark in this picture. (This picture was taken by my son from a moving car). How did the car got itself in there? I can't find the entry point. So, it must have "flew" in! Why? Is it because of drunken driver?
