Almost two years ago, my D700 never load paper properly unless I snipped off a wedge shape at the edge of the paper. It is so frustrating and annoying. A solution is finally found. I just tape (I use laminating paper material)as in the photo below. Remember to apply tension to the tape.

Epson SureLab D700 Printhead issue and my solution
I am sure that many user of this printer found that the printhead is hopelessly problematic. I have changed two printheads since I bought it. And it is not cheap! So, I will document it here what I learnt in order to extend the life of the printhead. The information are shared to me by the service engineer.
1. If you use power clean, do it once only. More power clean will damage the head;
2. Always use normal clean. If the head doesn't seem to improve after two cleaning, switch it off and let it rest for a few hours or overnight;
3. Print as often as you can;
4. Don't switch off the printer even if you are not using it;
Practicing the above, I found that clogged printhead is less of an issue.
Last tip:
If the paper never load properly after the paper had unloaded, just use a scissors to snip off a triangle piece from both side of the paper.
Please comment here if you have any other tips.

Crafty Scammer
I received an email from "PayPal" telling me that some $69.00 has been charge to my account. It even include a "Cancel Payment" button for me to click. On checking, the cancel button is leading me to some unknown site. At the unknown site, it asked for all kind of personal information.
What I did was to immediately reported this as Phishing Scam so that Hotmail will do something about it.
So, be careful!

Windows 10 Fall Updates and Epson Surelab D700
I have finally replaced the Epson D700 printer head and also the pump unites. The printer is now back to normal.
Over the weekend, I installed Window 10 updated. It gave me the following problems:
1. Communication to the printer via USB keeps breaking and I can no longer print;
2. Photoshop CC 2018 (Latest version) is half dead! I mean, it keeps crashing and gives strange errors. Also, Photoshop will hang for no reason.
To resolve the problems, I have now rolled back to my older version. So, my printer is now working again. I have not tested Photoshop. Should be ok.

Epson SureLab D700 Printer clogged print head or is it?
(Note: I am updating this post whenever I have new information. So please do scroll to the end.)
Epson probably made one of the nicest colour photo printer for small time professional use. It is small enough to be fitted into a small office and it is fast enough to probably meet any demanding print job for small businesses.
I am probably the only freelance photographer using D700 printer in Sarawak. It was totally free from problem for the first one year of operation. However, problem started after one year of usage. It keeps complaining of clogged print head and the printed images had fine "scratch lines". See this two images:
So, I refreshed the black cartridge and without doing anything, the subsequent three print patterns seem to be getting better and better (no head cleaning in between test print pattern). This is inconsistent with a clogged print head! Since I am running out of patience, I switched the printer on and off. And indeed, the final print pattern (not shown above) is perfect and when I did my test print, the picture is now perfect (see above left portion). My conclusion:
The so called clogged print head is just a false alarm. It has to do with ink level in the cartridge and probably the Epson design of the ink pump is not that good! If you have same issue like me, try to install a new cartridge and see if the problem goes away. Please do share your experience in the comment here.
Please note that, above is just one of the issues faced by many users of this printer. My issue seems to be related to low ink level. Many others who have almost new ink cartridge also give the same "clogged printer head" problem.
Update: 18-Sept-2017
One fine day, I found ink all over the table! Now, that was big issue! I called the service engineer and they came to change my ink pumps, all of them. I have already suspected that the ink pumps were not behaving. After changing the ink pumps, the printer started to print again but for the black ink, it showed "scratch line". On the test print, it looks perfect but not on actual photo printing.
Two months later, I decided to change the print head. Thanks God, now everything is back to normal.
Total cost for changing the print head and pump is about RM2500. It is not cheap to maintain this baby. If it is not for convenient and my own ability to maintain the print quality, I would have thrown this printer out.
Update: 05 Dec 2017
My humble recommendation for users of this printer:
1. You must switch on often and don't leave it idle for a prolong period. Even if you are not printing.
2. If you see any line on the test pattern, and the problem won't go away no matter how many wash, just leave it on over night and try again. The problem generally goes away.
3. Switch off the auto detection of clogged print head. (May not always be a good idea.)
4. Keep the printer clean.
5. The biggest annoyance now is that the paper loading is always problematic. I was taught that you snip off a wedge shape with a scissor on both side of the paper and it should always work.
If you have not bought this printer and you are thinking about it, ask yourself these few questions:
1. Why not outsource printing? I don't want because they are in-consistence with quality
2. Are you ready to spend about US$600 a year for maintenance? I am hoping that my pump and print head are now ok.
My opinion is that the print head, head cap and pumps are flawed in design. Other than that, this is a beautiful printer!
Update: 16-Sept-2018
The print head suddenly died! It was changed out on 2nd Oct 2018 after printing just 10K photos.
I was told that it is best to leave the printer switched on ALL the time. That a print shop in town probably (my estimate) printed more than 200K photos before a print head died.
Update: 22 Nov 2018
My service technician told me NOT to do POWER HEAD CLEANING. It will damage the print head. Normal head cleaning should be sufficient. If the problem doesn't go away after three times, just let it rest for 30 minutes. If problem persist, you may consider switching on and off or just leave the machine switched on overnight.
For my machine, I have replaced the print head twice, changed all the pumps and it is now working fine.
Only outstanding issue: Why the paper never load properly? So to overcome this issue, I will always cut off a wedge shape at the edge of the paper if I wanted to load paper and do printing. I also set the sleep timer to a longer period so that it doesn't go to sleep too fast. If anyone has a solution to this issue, please do drop a comment.

It keeps complaining of clogged print head and the printed images had fine "scratch lines". See this two images:
The more I cleaned the print head, the worse the problem becomes. So serious that it gave me stress and depression! Calling the service engineer seems to take forever as I am an hour flying time from the nearest service centre. So, I have to do problem analysis myself.
What I have done so far:
1. Head cleaning is not much use other than consuming ink.
2. Switch the printer off overnight. The problem may disappear.
3. Switch the printer on and off may solve the problem.
4. I changed the print setting to "fine". Problem went away for a few weeks.
From the above three scenarios, I am convinced that it has nothing to do with clogged print heads. So, I did some problem solving analysis:
1. Today, the printer made the most disgusting print ever. See the right portion of the picture above.
I noticed for while that my ink level for cyan and black is low. I refreshed my cyan cartridge and the cyan pattern is now perfect. However, the black ink pattern can't be worse. See pattern 1 below.

原始點 - If you can understand Chinese, this is the official website for Origin Point, a good teaching for pain management. I have not study it closely and I think it is very closely related to trigger points, which is also for pain management.

The first two videos are in Chinese and the third one below is in English.
This one below is like the one above minus the introduction.

How passionate are you with your work?
In anything we do, the results shows how dedicated we are to carry out our duty. In my last 30+ years of working life, I came across many people who need constant "pushing" and encouragement. They seems to have no motivation at all. Example, when one part of the process chain breaks down, the whole process no longer works. This may have severe consequences to the company or causes severe delay to project. If there are such person, it is better to leave the job than to cause problem.
When coming to photography, it is my passion since I was very young. In the pre-75's, the retouching pencil and easel are the only tools to make any portrait nice. I don't like it (because it is very tedious) and hence, I asked my poor brother to do it all the time. Now, photography and Photoshop or image editing software are part and parcel of any final photo products. The result is either for better or for worse depending on the viewer. I came across a first prize winner and the sponsor simply refused to use the photo in their advertisement or printing for the simple reason that it is no longer real.
So, when I was commissioned to take a group photo, the normal venue was suddenly changed so that they can be more with nature. Worse is that the sun was shining brightly and there was hardly any good place to shoot so that the background is nice.
The first photo below is the original before editing. The steel structure is not very nice. The background is a little washout. So, this is when Photoshop comes useful.
Before...
After editing...
You see the difference in the photo? If I have no passion in what I am doing, I would just print the original and blame it on the lousy venue! So, when you deliver your photos, does your client gives you a thumb-up?
Someone called me "big event shooter" because I was involved in taking important big events for large companies in Miri. If you need my service, do not hesitate to call me. My fees is extremely reasonable. If the event is important enough to be recorded, you need someone who have good camera and equipment and most importantly, knows how to use them. Just call me on +6012 8782007.

Lutong Primary School 73-78 reunion
Talking about class reunion, it brought back lots of memories. They can be good or bad. And lots of surprises and also lots of laughter. It is as if a long lost brother or sister is finally found!
I was invited by my ex-colleague to help her record her reunion on camera. This reunion reminded me of my own reunion a couple of years ago. The sentiment and mood are exactly the same. So, if you have not have a reunion, you can consider to have one!
The surprises are always the same:1. The worst performer in class is now a "big shot";
2. The naughtiest in class will still be naughty but could be very successful!
3. You will be surprised how many childhood buddies you don't recognise!
4. Recall of the naughtiest thing you did!
5. A time for apologies or forgiveness.
6. Well kept secret finally out in the open!
But one thing we must all remember, though we may have grown up, behave yourself!
BTW, I normally shoot event, actual day wedding, portrait and graduation photos. My fees is definitely affordable even though I shoot for Shell and Petronas.

Pujut Bypass opening today
Today, a new road will be opened, ie, Pujut Bypass. This means that road users from Permy can go straight to Medan Kerbau directly, cutting the jam and extra distance. This also means that people wanting to go to the airport will probably cut travel time by another 10 minutes.
This gate will be opened for good this morning. But drivers must still be careful because the construction site is just beside the road and I expect people will be walking around.
One interesting note, I hope the photo above is the correct one because when I went to the site, a worker were blur and only said that the road will open this morning and then he was also pointing to the next road!

My new toys
After a long hiatus (have been very busy after retirement), I think I just have to update this blog as I think it is an important event in our life! Believe it or not, we bought a low end smartphone. Nothing to sing about as compared to those having a thousand ringgit iPhone 6, etc, this is just a humble RedMi 1S 8GB costing just over RM400 from Lazada. The idea is to be able to access Wifi and I think Maxis or whoever will probably be disappointed if I tell them that I have no intention to purchase their "packages" yet unless there is a very good reason for me to do so. Everything need to be cost justified before subscribing or buying.
So, this is the phone, so called smartphone!
And these are the well used phones we currently use... we called this sweating the asset! Actually the HP is a smartphone from the yesteryear!
In addition to smartphone, we also bought some cubes from China. The two younger boys wanted to challenge each other!
