Local Delicacy - Sago Worm or Sago Grub (Si'et in Melanau)
Photography: Laing Emang Text: William Ting

One of the delicacies amongst our native friends is the sago grub. The sago grub is actually a larvae of a type of beetle. It is locally regarded as a high nutrient delicacy.
Normally, the native would cut down a sago tree and leave it there to "rot". In the process, the beetles would lay eggs and thus... larvae. The native would then split the trunk open and harvest the grub.
My colleague, Laing took these pictures in Mukah. The native brought the grub to the Tamu (market) for sale.

Each package is sold for RM15! This is about US$5.00 or 2 pounds. The grub can be eaten raw or fried (deep fry or shallow/stir fry). My friend told me that it tastes nice!

Notice the sharp black claw on the head. A few years ago, there was a case of a very young child helping herself to one of the live grub. The grub actually burrow through the stomach wall of the child which eventually causes death. So live grub should never be eaten by a young child because the digestive juice in the stomach is not strong enough to kill the grub.
